Back to School 2026: Evergreen’s September Mission to Support Young Learners in Port Harcourt
This September, Evergreen is taking Back to School beyond school supplies — and into the classrooms where they are needed most.
A new school term often comes with excitement.
Children return to their classrooms. Teachers prepare new lessons. Parents begin the familiar process of purchasing school materials, uniforms, books and other necessities.
But for many children, returning to school does not necessarily mean returning to a fully equipped learning environment.
Sometimes, the need is as simple as having enough chalk to teach a lesson.
Sometimes, it is having a whiteboard that an entire classroom can actually use.
Sometimes, it is a pupil having the assessment materials needed to demonstrate what they have learned.
And sometimes, it is a broken classroom chair that needs to be repaired before a child can comfortably sit and learn.
This September, Evergreen is responding to those needs.
Through the Evergreen Back-to-School Project 2026, we will be visiting selected schools in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to provide practical educational support and help create better learning conditions for pupils and teachers.

Why Back-to-School Support Matters
Education does not happen through children alone.
A child can be willing to learn, a teacher can be committed to teaching, and a school can have dedicated staff — but the learning environment still matters.
The classroom is where lessons become experiences. It is where children ask questions, write their first answers, take assessments, develop confidence and begin to understand what they are capable of achieving.
When basic teaching and learning resources are missing, teachers are forced to work around limitations that should not exist.
That is why Evergreen’s approach this year is intentionally practical.
Rather than simply distributing items because they are commonly associated with a Back-to-School campaign, we are focusing on needs identified directly within the schools we will be visiting.
Our goal is simple:
To provide support that responds to real classroom needs and contributes to a better learning experience for children.
The Schools We Are Visiting
For the September 2026 Back-to-School Project, Evergreen will be visiting schools in Elelewon, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Two schools have been identified for this phase of the project:
1. State Primary School, Elelewon
State Primary School, Elelewon is one of the schools Evergreen will be supporting this September.
One of the school’s identified needs is customised assessment booklets to support structured evaluation for its pupils.
The school has identified a need for assessment booklets at ₦1,000 per pupil, with approximately 320 pupils requiring support.
That means providing assessment booklets for all 320 pupils would require approximately:
₦320,000
This is not simply about providing paper.
Assessment allows teachers to understand how well pupils are following lessons, identify areas where children may need additional help and monitor learning progress.
A properly structured assessment process gives teachers information they can use to support their pupils more effectively.

Classroom Chairs Also Need Attention
Another need identified at State Primary School, Elelewon is the repair of damaged classroom chairs.
The estimated cost is ₦2,000 per chair.
Rather than replacing every chair, repairing usable damaged chairs can be a practical and cost-effective way of improving the classroom environment while making existing resources useful again.
The final cost will depend on the number of chairs requiring repair.
A Practical Need: Grounds Maintenance
The school also identified a cutlass for grounds maintenance as a practical need.
While it may not immediately appear to be an educational resource, maintaining a safe and usable school environment is part of creating a space where children can learn.
A school requires more than desks and books.
It also requires a functional environment that teachers, pupils and other members of the school community can safely use.
2. Community Primary School, Elelewon
Our second school for this year’s Back-to-School Project is Community Primary School, Elelewon.
Here, the needs are focused particularly on basic classroom teaching materials.
Chalk for Daily Instruction
Chalk remains an important classroom resource for teachers who use chalkboards for daily instruction.
A teacher should not have to worry about whether there is enough chalk to complete a lesson.
For Community Primary School, providing chalk will help support everyday classroom teaching and give teachers one less basic resource to worry about.
More Whiteboards for More Classrooms
Another important need identified by the school is additional whiteboards.
At present, the school operates with only one whiteboard, which limits instructional delivery across its classrooms.
One whiteboard cannot adequately serve multiple classrooms.
Providing additional whiteboards would allow more teachers to have access to an essential teaching tool and create more opportunities for lessons to be delivered effectively.
This is a relatively simple intervention, but its impact can extend across many lessons and many pupils.
The Bigger Picture
The needs identified in these schools may appear small when considered individually.
One booklet.
One chair.
One piece of chalk.
One whiteboard.
One tool for maintaining the school grounds.
But education is often strengthened through these seemingly small things.
A child needs somewhere to sit.
A teacher needs somewhere to write.
A pupil needs materials with which to complete an assessment.
A classroom needs the tools required for instruction.
And a school needs an environment where learning can take place with dignity.
This is why Evergreen believes that impact does not always have to begin with something big.
Sometimes, impact begins with identifying a need and deciding that it is worth responding to.
What Your Support Can Make Possible
The Evergreen Back-to-School Project is not only about what our organisation can provide.
It is an invitation for individuals, families, businesses, organisations and friends of Evergreen to participate in something that directly supports children and teachers.
Your contribution can help us provide:
* Assessment booklets for pupils
* Repairs for damaged classroom chairs
* Whiteboards for classrooms
* Chalk for daily instruction
* Grounds-maintenance equipment
* Other essential educational resources identified during our school visits
For example, ₦1,000 can provide an assessment booklet for one pupil at State Primary School, Elelewon.
₦10,000 can provide assessment booklets for 10 pupils.
₦50,000 can support 50 pupils.
And ₦320,000 can provide the identified assessment booklets for all 320 pupils.
Every contribution brings us closer to meeting these needs.
Beyond September
The Back-to-School Project is part of Evergreen’s broader commitment to supporting children and communities through education.
We believe that educational support should not end when the school bags are distributed or when the first day of school is over.
The real question is:
What happens after the children return to the classroom?
Are they learning in an environment that supports them?
Do teachers have the basic tools they need?
Can pupils be properly assessed?
Are damaged facilities being addressed?
Are schools receiving the attention and support they need from their wider community?
These are the questions that shape our approach.
Current education initiatives across Nigeria increasingly recognize the importance of combining enrolment efforts with learning materials and other forms of support that help children remain engaged in school. (Cross River State News)
Evergreen wants to contribute to that effort at the community level — one school, one classroom and one child at a time.
Join Evergreen This September
We cannot do this alone.
The needs of these schools are real, but they are also addressable when people come together.
Whether you are able to sponsor one pupil’s assessment booklet, repair a classroom chair, provide a whiteboard, donate teaching materials or contribute toward the wider project, your support can become part of a child’s educational experience.
This September, we are choosing to look beyond the excitement of Back to School and pay attention to what happens inside the school.
Because children deserve more than simply returning to school.
They deserve a classroom prepared for them.
They deserve teachers equipped to teach them.
They deserve an environment that supports their potential.
And sometimes, creating that environment starts with something as simple as a repaired chair, a new whiteboard, a booklet or a piece of chalk.
This September, let’s help make the classroom a better place to learn.
